The Book Club
Last months book was The Pavilion in the Clouds, it was generally well worth reading and thought a good holiday read. Our next book is “We Were the Lucky Ones “ by Georgia Hunter, based on the true story of her Jewish family. It ranges from pre-war Parisian jazz clubs to the Siberian gulag, and follows the Kure family as refugees, prisoners and fighters. It is a testament to the human spirit able to find ways to survive.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6th October.

Garstang Ukulele Group
After all the excitement of our Summer “Simply the Best” Concert life has settled down again. We were delighted to be invited back to Alexandra Court Care Home knowing full well the warmth of the welcome we would receive. A lively set list of “family” favourites and new songs gave everyone the chance to sing along and have fun. It makes our job so much easier when staff and residents are ready to party too.
Our next gig was at Oakfield Nursing home a place we have visited many times. As ever staff and residents showed their enjoyment by singing along to our very well received playlist. Our performance was concluded by warm applause and a strong desire for us to return very soon.
I am very happily impressed, each time we play, at the talent within our group. Collectively we know how to put on a show, but individually there is so much singing and playing skill that really enhances our performances.
Our soloists never let us down and give our performances a variety that means no two shows are ever the same. Maybe I do not say this often enough, but “ thank you” for the contributions you make to our group. Thank you also to the tireless pair who work so hard behind the scenes to keep our group happy together. Last but definitely not least, a warm thank you to the rest of our group, from the newest to the longest serving, from the oldest to the youngest, you all make a difference and bring real pleasure to the community in and around Garstang.
As ever, you can contact any member of our group, message us on our Facebook page, email Trevor Philips at mail@trevorphillips.co.uk or call 019956003780

I wonder if anyone saw the ladies from Southport on television who have started a singing group for anyone who thinks they can’t sing. What a happy group just enjoying singing and more importantly coming together to chat, laugh and just get out of the house making new friends. That is what SONGBIRDS are about so don’t be shy and don’t be lonely join us at the Art Centre every Monday 1.30 to 3.30pm no auditions, just a warm welcome.

The John Towers Big Band
We had two very well attended gigs during September, the first of which was at St Helens Church, Churchtown followed by our usual monthly concert at Winmarleigh Village Hall.
We finished both concerts with a Big Band arrangement of Deep Purple’s “Smoke On The Water” which pleased the Rev.Andrew Wilkinson at St Helens Church as he is a big Deep Purple fan.
Unfortunately we don’t have any Concerts during October as Winmarleigh Village Hall is holding a fundraising fashion show on our usual third Friday concert night. We will however be back there on Friday 20th November.so we hope to see our usual enthusiastic audience there on that date.
