Chess Club

Three years ago, Garstang Chess Club was founded at the Garstang Arts Centre where we met every Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm – 3:30pm. It was an inauspicious start with only four permanent members. That number has grown to twenty members, who now meet every Thursday afternoon 1:30pm – 3:30pm, and every second and fourth Monday of the month from 7:00pm – 9:30pm.

In October 2025, the club joined the Lancaster Chess League, Division Two, entering two teams of four players from a pool of interested players. The League covers North Lancashire and South Cumbria and the season runs from October through to April. For those who enjoy playing match chess, there are plenty of challenges to be had, and opportunities to develop knowledge and skills whilst playing against rated opponents within the League.

Garstang Chess Club is always looking to welcome new members across a range of abilities. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, we have something for everyone. We have some under 18-year-old members, although all under eighteens must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

Do feel free to pop down to one of our meetings at the Garstang Arts Centre for a chat and/or a friendly game. You will be allowed three free visits before being asked to commit to joining.
