What’s on in February

AT GARSTANG ARTS CENTRE

EXHIBITIONS
Liam Dickinson is a full-time painter based in Lancashire.  He has been drawing & painting for as long as he could hold a pencil, slowly but surely turning his passion into a full-time career.
He was a finalist in the 2017 Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the year which has led to an exciting professional career.  Liam accepts commissions, including wedding & events, which are
very reasonably priced & he endeavours to meet budget requirements.  Liam’s exhibition opens on Tuesday 11th February  & closes on Thursday 6th March.
An exhibition not to be missed.

200 CLUB FUNDRAISER
The list of renewed numbers for the 200 tickets is growing by the day.  Many thanks to all who have either left cash at the Arts Centre or paid via the bank.
There are still a few numbers which are not being renewed for various reasons so please contact me asap if you wish to be in with a chance of being one of the lucky 8 cash prize winners.  Don’t forget 50% of every penny received for the tickets goes direct to the Arts Centre to help with the running costs. £13 buys a ticket for each of the two draws, spring and autumn, £6.50 will buy a single chance for the April draw.

The SPRING DRAW date has been set – Saturday 26th April.  This is also the date for the Intergroup Quiz, and I would like to hear from anyone who would like to put a team together to represent the 200 Club.  The cup has been previously won by the 200 Club in 2006 and 2009 and I would love to see our name on the Trophy again.

Garstang Ukulele Group
January is always a poignant month. We often look back nostalgically over the past year at the events that have shaped us. At the same time it’s also natural to look forward. We begin it with the hope and determination to be a better, fitter, kinder person. I wonder if your resilience is stronger than many of us who by this time in January have let our good intentions waiver.
Our ukulele group is a good representation of people everywhere. January gives us the chance to reflect on what we have achieved in 2024; ponder what we want to do differently in 2025 and regroup and re-energise ourselves to continue with what are always our main New Year Resolutions: to support our Art Centre, bring fun and enjoyment to you all and raise money for charity.
As ever, you can contact any member of our group, message us on our Facebook page, email Trevor Philips at mail@trevorphillips.co.uk or call 01995600378 and find out just how well we can add some fun to your celebrations

The Book Club
Happy New Year to all book lovers.  A lively meeting as usual, although on the whole the last book just got a general okay opinion. The next book is “Time and Time Again” by Ben Elton.  It’s 1914 and an ex soldier and adventurer knows that a terrible war is coming. He knows because that century is already history for him. Somehow he must change history, he must prevent the war. A war that begins with a single bullet,  but can another single bullet save it?
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 4th February at 10.30am

Garstang Chess Club 2025
Formed in November 2022, Garstang Chess Club continues to meet at Garstang Arts Centre every Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and we now have ten members.  As the new year begins, we are looking to expand our membership and we are now opening two slots a month for evening games, which will run on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month from 7pm to 9pm.  The first evening meeting will commence on the 2nd Monday of February and it is our aim to accommodate those who work and/or have other commitments during the day.
We are a friendly and sociable group who play chess for the love of, and an abiding interest in, the game.  We welcome all levels of ability from beginners to Grand Masters.  Perhaps you used to play and would like to rekindle your skills, or maybe you would like to learn to play from a standing start.  Either way, a warm welcome awaits in an environment where egos are left on the doorstep.  We also welcome under 18-year-olds; however, we must ask that they be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Further, we have been approached by Lancaster Chess Club to join a regional league starting in September 2025.
We aim to build a club team over the coming months who will be capable of rising to the challenge, although only members who wish to participate in the league will be called upon to play.  Some of those league games will be hosted at Garstang Arts Centre, and we are currently standardising our equipment to meet the English Chess Federation specifications.
Finally, if you would like to come along and have a game, you can have three trial visits before deciding whether or not to become a member, and all the current members are happy to answer any questions you may have.  And do not worry about making a mistake, because you will be in good company with the rest of us who have made significant contributions to the colossal monument of Great British Blunders.
For more info contact- David on 07488330492 or just come along.
