Garstang Calendar 2024
2023 has not long started but the Arts Centre together with the help of the Camera Club are busy producing a Calendar for 2024 with fabulous photographs of the Garstang area.
A number of local businesses have kindly agreed to sponsor each month. If you haven’t yet been approached and have a shop or business and want your logo to be featured, it is not too late to be included.
The calendars should be ready for sale on our stand at the Garstang Show.
Please contact Anne Marie, Muriel or Vanessa at the Arts Centre.
Exhibitions
The Cafe Artists group initially met many years ago as members of an art studio in Preston which closed in 2020. Since the end of Covid restrictions they re-grouped, meeting each week to paint in a bright space at the rear of Longridge Station Cafe where they continue their journey as artists to develop their individual style.
The exhibition runs from Tuesday 11th April through to Thursday 4th May.

Ukulele Soup
A blend of music to warm your evening with a roll on the side’
Ukulele Soup is currently a 7 piece group. The group made their debut at the 2021 Xmas party in Winmarleigh Village Hall and they appeared in the Garstang Arts Society’s 2022 Lunchtime Concert series.
This group started out in a traditional ukulele group, but have developed to a more orchestrated style. Their songs are a mix of choral and soloist performances backed by concert, baritone and bass ukuleles, giving a different and distinct sound.
Ukulele Soup includes all the humour and fun of our riotous frontman, Andy Stewart.

Garstang Chess Club Update
A few short months since our first meeting, Garstang Chess Club is now in full swing with a few core members. We meet every Thursday afternoon (1:30pm – 3:30pm) at the Garstang Arts Centre and there is never a dull moment: monumental blunders, defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, not to mention one or two cliff-hangers. The tension is real!
Of course, on a more week to week basis, this is just ordinary people coming together for a couple of hours to enjoy a game of chess. We help each other with analysis to up our game and develop new strategies.
While it’s always nice to win, it’s equally nice to have an enjoyable and interesting game in good spirits with one or two good laughs along the way. There is a secure deposit box at the entrance to the building for egos.
We are looking to expand the membership and encourage more people to come along. You don’t have to commit and join straight away. Come and watch and/or have a game. Perhaps make a start by learning some of the basics and begin to develop your own strategies – all the members are happy to help. It might be that you are a really hot player and you can teach us a thing or two.
In any event, a warm welcome awaits.
Furthermore, there is always an exceptionally nice pot of tea available, along with a selection of exceedingly delicious cakes, all at jolly reasonable prices.
Once again, we meet at Garstang Art Centre on Thursday afternoon, 1:30pm – 3:30pm.
The Book Club
Another lively meeting this month with plenty of discussion! The members of the group all enjoy a range of genre, which encourages us to step out of our comfort zone and try something that we possibly wouldn’t choose.
This month is no exception with the following three books being suggested.
The first one is, ‘How to Kill Your Family’ by Bella Mackie. I won’t say a book of ideas! A young woman becomes pregnant and is rejected by the rich father and his family. Her daughter grows up set on revenge and becomes a serial killer targeting the family. A dark comedy in places.
Secondly we decided on any Bill Bryson book. He’s a popular writer of science and history so there’s plenty to choose from.
Our final choice is ‘In the Heart of the Garden’ by Leah Fleming . This is a saga of the Bagshott family, tracing the importance that tending the garden had to the women throughout the generations.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 4th April.
