Garstang Poetry Appreciation Group announcement

Young people from the Garstang area, including Winmarleigh, who are interested in poetry are invited to enter this year’s James Dodding poetry awards.

There are two age categories: Senior: ages 12 to 16 (on June 29, 2023)

Junior: ages 7 to 11 (on June 29, 2023)

The prizes are: Senior: first prize £50 cash, small shield and poetry book.

Second prize £25.

Third prize £15.

Junior: first prize £50 cash, small shield and poetry book.

Second prize £25. Third prize £15. The theme/topic for the 2023 awards is open, ie it can be on any topic of the writer’s choice.

Entrants can apply independently or via their school.

Garstang-born James Dodding was a founder member of Garstang Poetry Appreciation Society.

He played a major role in arts and theatre education in the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada.

Many of his students went on to become household names including David Bowie, Gary Oldman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Jamesdied in 2018, aged 87.

These awards are in his honour to encourage creative talent among local young people.
