Exhibitions
A new exhibitor at Garstang Arts Centre is Kylie Miles.
Kylie is 33 years old and currently studying for a BA Hons degree in commercial illustration with Lancaster University.
Despite a difficult childhood at home and at school, Kylie, who has multiple sclerosis and is autistic, is known as ‘smiley Kylie’ – always laughing and smiling even in the bad moments of life which helps her to cope with whatever life throws at her.
Now, halfway through her degree course she is living life as planned to the maximum. Each piece of her work tells a story and the fact that having a disability shouldn’t stop you from making the most of the time you have.
When she has completed her studies, Kylie’s aim is to see her work in books that appeal to young people.
The exhibition opens on Tuesday 14th February and runs to Thursday 9th March.

Garstang Book Club
The Book Club wishes you a Happy New Year
This month members’ had a choice of three books and all were well received by those who read them.
‘The Sealwoman’s Gift’ by Sally Magnussun was a thought provoking book based on the true story of the Barbary pirates. It starts in Iceland in the 1600s when 400 people are captured from one of the islands and taken as slaves to Algeria. It follows the life of one woman and her family and is a book of deep contrasts.
Our second book, ‘Longbourn’ by Jo Baker also provides contrasts! Set in the house of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, it follows the life of one of the servants, an easy read and an interesting book.
The third choice was ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ by Amor Towels. Set in Russia in 1922 after the revolution, a young count is arrested for writing a poem that was considered politically incorrect and his ‘prison’ is an attic room in the Metropol hotel in Moscow, where he remains for 35 years. Despite not leaving the room he still has his wealth and manages an interesting life.
The suggested reading for our next meeting is:
Dear Mrs Bird by A J Pearce – The story of a young woman who takes a typing job on a woman’s magazine and becomes their secret advice columnist. Set in London during World War 2
The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris – This is a debut novel set at the end of the American Civil War. It is a story of what happens to the slaves who have been set free. It explores the true physical and emotional costs of freedom.
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn – This is a true story of a couple made homeless in their 50’s and their decision to walk the 630 mile South West Coast path. The husband has a terminal illness so they feel they have nothing to lose. Endurance, stamina and a love of nature are certainly required.
The next meeting is on February 14th – Valentine’s day. You could say that our first choice has some romantic overtones.
