The Book Club
October saw another enjoyable meeting with lots of discussion. Quite a few of us had read ‘The Secret River’ by Kate Grenville, either for the meeting or in a previous life! The general feeling was that although it was a very well written book, it was not a comfortable read. The role of the convict settlers and their relationship with the aboriginal people provided much thoughtful discussion including- what happened then, the perception of the aborigines as savages, the hierarchy of that new society and reflections on whether things had improved in our modern day world. The second book, ‘All Her Fault’ a thriller by Andrea Mara, was considered an intriguing read with plenty of twists and turns in the plot – nobody had expected the ending.!
The two books next month are a contemporary novel by Daniel Silva who writes thrillers and spy novels. Our suggested read is ‘The Order’ which is one of his earlier works featuring art restorer Gabriel Allon, starting with a family holiday in Venice and leading to a mystery in the Vatican City where his friend Pope Paul V11 dies.
We also have a fantasy novel, ‘A Wizard of Earthsea’ by Ursula Le Guin. Often described as a coming of age story, it follows the journey of Ged as he seeks to free himself from a shadow creature.
The next meeting is on November 8th.
