What’s on in October

PAINT GARSTANG

What a wonderful day we had for the ‘en plein air event’ on Saturday the 3rd Sept.
Artists from  Blackburn and, as far afield as Wakefield, together with our own local painters, set up  easels in their chosen locations  and produced some amazing pictures.
Judge Daniel Sharples commented on the very high standard of the work. The 1st prize of £300 was won by Simon Blackley with his painting of Garstang High St. 2nd prize winner Rachel Crawshaw chose the Farmers Arms pub as the subject for her entry and Rod Walmsley won 3rd prize of £50 with his delightful study of the Wyre river bank.
The artists have been invited to enter their paintings in the Open Competition/Exhibition to be held at Garstang Arts Centre commencing on Tuesday 10th Jan 2023  when the artwork will be available for sale.
Visitors to the town were enthusiastic in their praise for our lovely market town; some
taking the opportunity to “browse specialists shops and take refreshments at a lovely
choice of pubs and cafes including sampling the Arts Centre fabulous cakes and brews”. Thanks must also go  Garstang’s own Ukulele Band for  giving the
town a real buzz and creating such a feel-good atmosphere. Garstang Camera Club were also out & about capturing the high spots of the day – look out for their forthcoming exhibition. We hope to repeat the event next year.

OCTOBER EXHIBITION

We welcome a new artist to the Arts Centre for our next exhibition – Mick Mulcahy
Mick  is a visual artist living in Longridge;  preferring to using acrylic in a style which attempts to fuse the genres of Impressionism, Divisionism and Fauvism.
He does however enjoy using pastels due to their tactility and the spontaneity they tend to generate. Mick’s  work is inspired from roaming the woodlands around the Ribble Valley, climbing the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and trekking the coastal paths of North Yorkshire.
The exhibition opens on Tuesday 27th September through to Thursday 20th October.

We will be running a workshop for complete beginners in the afternoon of the first Saturday in November. The cost will be £45 which includes a soprano ukulele worth £45.

how to move between the chords,
how to play 3/4 songs, and
the basic structure of 12 bar blues
If at the end of the workshop you feel that playing the ukulele is not for you, we would refund your fee and take back the ukulele.

The Book Club

A short piece this month as our meeting comes after the publication of ‘The Green Book’. I’m looking forward to discussing our recommended book ‘Hamnet’ and also any biography that the group have chosen to read.
This is probably a good opportunity to tell you a little about our group. We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 10.30. We usually have two books for the month suggested by members of the group, which we discuss, and then also talk about similar books of that genre or by the same author.
There usually follows a general discussion about other books that we’ve read and then we decide on two recommended readings for the next meeting. Not everyone manages to read the recommended books but there’s always plenty of discussion. The only qualification you need to join us is a love of reading!
