August started with a very successful performance by Ukulele Soup in the Arts Centre Thursday Concert programme. Ukulele Soup is a small group within the Garstang Ukulele Group who are aiming to play in a different style.
We are hoping to support the Plein Air competition on 3rd September, but otherwise it is a quiet month. So if you’re looking for some musical fun, have a look at our website and give me a call.

Book Club
Our Books this month were ‘A Spool of Blue Thread’ by Anne Tyler ,which was enjoyed by some who’d read it although others felt that it got a bit laboured in the middle. However it whetted the appetite and a few that hadn’t read it decided to try this author. Our second book ‘Blackberry Wine’ by Joanne Harris had a similar response – you either like her books or not. There was some discussion of her later works as some members felt that they lacked the quality of the earlier books and were not as good.
Next month we are going to focus on biography, the suggested book is ‘Toast’ by Nigel Slater or any other biography that you’d like to share. The other recommended book is ‘Hamnet’ by Maggie O’Farrell, which is fiction based on fact and is the story of the short life of Shakespeare’s son.
The next meeting is on 13th September.
